No it doesn't work with the Leap Pen...it is a workbook that helps them get used to controlling pencils or pens. The Leap Reader Pen worked with some books to help them connect words with 'sight' words to transition to reading on their own. My gkids enjoyed showing off to others how they we're learning to sound out words so they didn't used their Reader Pens.
