Regular microfiber towels work but they don't hold as much soapy water, are a little more tricky to keep a hold of, and there's not as much surface area compared to the tendrils on a wash pad or mitt. The tendrils on the mitts also get down in the crevices of grills and other texturing of a vehicles plastics. These Griot's Garage pads are great! They aren't overly thick but they hold lots of soapy water. There's nothing inside of them to roll up like the Platimum Series did. They feel good and wash good. I was so impressed with the first pair as soon as I received them that I bought a second pair right away. Fortunately they wash as good as I expected.
