They are low-cost, do more good than harm, and my brain has adjusted to the amplified sounds. If I had to choose between these enhancers and no assistance, I would choose these enhancers any day. They've been a lifesaver since I frequently interact with others. Hearing aids have an important purpose, and finely tuned ones can make understanding conversation possible for people like me. "Finely tuned" is important here.These more recent low cost "hearing enhancement aids" are not to be confused with hearing aids. They're more like sound amplifiers than aids tuned to your specific needs. Consequently they tend to amplify all sounds, rather than just the ones your ears are failing to hear well. In many circumstances this can be annoying. When I first tried on these enhancers I was overwhelmed by the sound of air being blown out of the mini-split near my desk. Those sounds don't get amplified much by my tuned hearing aids because I don't need assistance hearing them.All that said, hearing enhancers like these definitely have a useful purpose. They're low cost, they do more good than harm (i.e. they do make it possible to hear your TV more easily), and our brains can adapt to frequencies that are amplified more than our hearing deficits require. I do worry that older folks with arthritis may find the charging case impossible to manage. The remedy is to never put the top back on, but then the UV cleaner will never come on. ** The plastic protective strips over the charging contacts on the enhancers.
