LOCTITE 55 pipe thread sealant - thread sealing tape for fast, reliable sealsThis thread sealing cord from LOCTITE is the right choice for fast, reliable seals for pipe threads and fittings. It is suitable for securing and sealing threads made of metal and plastic. No waiting time is required for drying, as the thread develops an immediate sealing effect against full pressure. After tightening, the threaded connections can be readjusted. With DVGW/KTW approval for gas and drinking water*, the thread sealant is suitable for drinking water and other water pipes. In addition, the pipe seal is suitable for applications with high temperature exposure (up to 130°C). Application is quick and easy because the cutter is directly integrated.To use, clean parts with a wire brush. Place the end of the thread approx. two threads away from the end of the external thread and hold it with a finger. Wind the thread onto the pipe thread, starting at the pipe end and following the direction of the thread. For optimum function, the thread base should be filled, although direct placement in the thread turns is not necessary. Do not wind up too much thread as excess material is often forced out during fitting of the connections and complicates the fitting process. Cut the required length using the integrated cutting tool and place the loose end against the flanks of the pipe thread. **Q: Can this be used as spindle packing for a leaky valve stem**
A: I don't think you would have much success packing a valve stem, it's not designed for this purpose. Valve stem packing needs to retain pressure on the stem and this is why hemp, graphite (for high temperature applications) and PTFE reinforced with glass fibre are all used. Some valve stem seals are a fibrous type of compressible washer. If you use this Loctite product in this way it will leak.

**Q: Does this stuff have an expiry date?**
A: I would say not as it seems to me to be PTFE tape except in thread or rope form and PTFE doesnt have any expiry date as far as I know. I bought this along with a high temp gasket maker and the gasket maker seems to be far better.

**Q: How do you apply it to a tap or other connector ?**
A: You just wrap it around the threaded part in a zig zag motion so it crosses all the threads ...about 7 times..don't just follow the threads ..it won't work that way ...look on YouTube for the best explanation...it is great stuff .I use it rather than PTFE tape ,it's much better and stops leaks even if you have to turn the tap back a quarter turn to set it vertical ...was the best plumbing tape I,ve bought ...never bother with PTFE tape anymore .I,ve used it on dripping garden taps ,and it works first time

**Q: Would this work as a gasket seal on a water heater? It's all I can find that's water safe and up to the temperature.**
A: It’s only for use as a thread sealant. Not really recommended for use as a gasket material. If you mean a gasket in the traditional sense ie between 2 flat surfaces the. High temperature materials are available or even ‘liquid’ gasket such as Hermotite. Be very careful for using on a water heater if high temperature and pressures are involved. If you don’t feel confident or competent please consult a professional.
