Review: Perfect for my chimney - I've recently replaced an inset gas fire with an electric one. Although electric heating is more expensive than gas, it is more efficient, and there is no loss of heat going up the chimney. However, the instructions with the electric fire state that the chimney must be blocked off, presumably to prevent any falling debris from affecting the new fire. I looked at possible solutions but decided against any homemade remedy. This left the balloon-type ones and this Chimmney Sheep. Because the brickwork is very rough with a couple of bricks protruding, and also because the opening is quite high up, I dismissed the balloon type because there was a chance that it would not seal properly, it could get punctured, and that it would be difficult to reach the inflation tube. I also read some reviews that said they didn't stay inflated. This left this Chimney Sheep, which fortunately was available in a suitable size for my chimney, being a little larger than the opening. It took only moments to screw in the handle, there is no need for it to be overtightened, and insert it into the chimney, where it fitted perfectly. Before purchasing, I thought it was a little expensive, but when I received it, I could tell that it was very well made in the UK. It does the job it's supposed to do, and it's there permanently with no maintenance required, although it could be easily removed if necessary. The other advantage is that although it prevents virtually all of the draught from going up the chimney, it's permeable so that it still allows the chimney to 'breathe' to reduce any chance of damp. I do, however, have a cowl on top of the chimney pot which allows air to pass, but stops rain from entering. In the long run, this Chimmney Sheep will save me money by preventing loss of heat from draughts up the chimney. In summary, this was an ideal way of blocking up my chimney, it's very quick and easy to fit, does exactly what it's supposed to do, and I'm happy to recommend it.
Review: Quality product, works well - Great product. Seems expensive but it's good quality and fits well (having used the size guide on the Chimney Sheep website). Much as I like the ventilation/air changing provided by leaving the chimney open, at this time of year it causes a constant, strong draught just sucks the heat out of the house via the living room fireplace. I had the sheep fitted within 10 minutes of it arriving and its effect on stopping the draught/breeze that usually whistles through the door or under and around its sides was almost instant. So we're a bit warmer and more comfortable, just like that; definitely worth the outlay.

## Features

- An open chimney draws warm air out of the room and pulls cold draughts down, right through winter. This Herdwick wool pad sits in the flue above the fireplace, blocks that airflow, and the room warms up noticeably and holds its heat.
- Wool felt stops the draught while still letting the chimney breathe, so it works on a disused fireplace without trapping damp or condensation behind it. It also keeps soot, dust and the odd stray bird out of the room.
- Getting the size right is what makes it seal, and it's the usual reason for a return. Measure your opening front to back and side to side, then pick the size whose fit range matches. Round, square and oblong sizes are all covered.
- It fits by hand in seconds, no tools, and sits neatly out of sight. Take it out before you light a fire, and the reminder tag hangs into the hearth so nobody forgets. Moth-proofed and reusable for years. It stores in the Chimney Sheep Wrap.
- Made in Cumbria from British Herdwick fleece,. A natural, effective way to cut heat loss, and 10% of profit goes to Buy Land Plant Trees CIC.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Hi. Does this prevent cats climbing up chimney?**
A: A lot of customers buy these to stop cats climbing the chimney. A determined cat would be able to pull it out but in general once the gap is blocked with a Chimney Sheep it deters cats from trying to climb up.

**Q: The main reason I want to get a chimney sweep is to permanently block debris and soot coming down an unused bedroom fireplace. Would this do the job?**
A: Hello,

If you are getting a large amount of debris and soot falling down your chimney it may be worth having your chimney swept as there may be a large build up of soot from previous lit fires.

The Chimney Sheep is designed to be left in the chimney for as long as you would like - it forms a seal that will stop draughts and particulates - and they do need to be a couple of inches bigger in each dimension in order to hold themselves in place tightly.
Because they fit into the chimney very snugly they are also very effective at stopping pieces of chimney debris and soot from entering the room below , they will simply collect on top of the sheep.

If you get particularly large amounts of soot and debris falling down your chimney it may be worth taking the sheep out of position very occasionally just to give it a quick shake - making sure there isn't excess amounts on there.

I hope this helps,

Kind Regards,

Taylor

**Q: Hi. If this is slightly to big can it be cut down to size. THank’s**
A: It can be trimmed down a little if necessary with sharp scissors but the wool is very compressive so it should squash in to fit before you need to cut it.

**Q: What size chimney sheep required for a 15x5 chimney**
A: The 16" x 6" will be fine for this one. We usually say add 2 inches to each dimension but when it's as small as this, especially on the depth, the 16" x 6" will be fine.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very happy with a chimney sheep
*by I***C on 24 May 2020*

I am pleased with the fit and it works better than a balloon as I have an electric Dimplex myst log burner which does generate a little heat, not much but enough to deflate the plastic balloons. Using the chimney sheep stops anything falling down but it does not stop wind noise from the chimney cap - I can hear it just as much but certainly no chimney bits fall down so it must be doing its job up there. I had to push up a long way in my chimney but thats fine, I no longer get a down draft but it is allowing air to circulate in my room another problem with the plastic balloons which caused me to have condensation on the windows - no more with a chimney sheep - I like the fact it is a natural product - shame they have to use plastic for handle - just hope its recycled plastics.
