## Description

A Handheld History is a unique celebration of portable platforms and their iconic games. Forty years ago, businessmen fiddling with calculators inspired Gunpei Yokoi to create the Game & Watch. Ever since then, handheld gaming has been hugely influential, spawning communities who trade Pokémon in the playground and share Miis on the subway. This introspective adventure will delve into decades of gaming memories and reconnect you to that long car journey full of discarded AA batteries before speeding ahead to the contemporary days of blockbusters in your backpack. Handheld gaming is celebrated loudly, proudly, and across hundreds of beautifully assembled pages of art and essays. Featuring words from many incredible voices, this is an unmissable ode to the gaming device that you keep close to your heart – right in your jacket pocket. Words and art by: Alex Olney Ashens Bob Wulff Brandon Saltalamacchia Brian Crecente Hannah Kwan Cosselmon Janet Garcia Jason Bradbury Jeff Grubb Jonathan Traynor Kevin Kenson Larry Bundy Jr. Mike Diver Raul Higuera Stephen Maurice Graham Plus many more! Made in collaboration with Retro Dodo . This edition published in partnership with Expanse, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers .

Review: Handheld history book - The recipient loved it
Review: A must for the handheld gamer - This is a wonderful book, cataloging the journey through hand held history. It is put together brilliantly detailing the various devices and the versions available. There are some great essays about some devices and individual’s experience using them. This is all bound together in a beautiful hardback cover with fab illustrations and good quality photos. However, I have 2 criticisms. 1, I wish it was put together by device chronologically. I can see that the author decided to organise it by device and then by time however I believe this to be Ill-conceived as the reader misses out on what devices were competing with each other at the same time. And how the technology develops across the whole industry. 2, I believe the author is too young. There is a definite bias towards Nintendo in this book due to the fact that they had established market dominance by the time the authors journey begins with the Game Boy Colour in 1998. Which means the actual game-changer that was the original GameBoy and the Game and Watch devices that lead to it feels glossed over and there is no mention of the Sega Game Gear until page 185. As a lover of all hand-held consoles, I feel that many of the other devices in this book are not celebrated as much as Nintendo products.
