The opening can cope with a maximum diameter of 2.5mm.I worked around the small size by threading a split ring onto both items I wanted to attach then threading the hook onto one of the rings - see second photo. So attaching the two items is just a matter of hooking onto its ring. I use 40mm rings and it is not at all fiddly despite the small size of the hooks.I have been using these excellent hooks for a year now and not a single one has failed on me.
