They absolutely DO NOT automatically flip over to right themselves unless you somehow learn the advanced buttons on the controller. We don't understand those instructions and haven't learned the more complicated buttons yet. Reverse works, but is basically unnecessary. I originally saw teens using these on a small lake and fell in love, but I got them for our pool. I would only use these in a lake if you've got access to a boat or canoe to retrieve them. They hold about 25-30 minutes of battery life, and the backup battery provides an additional half hour. After that, you're pretty much done for that play session. These are a total gem for a family with older children and teens who are aging out of toys or difficult to buy for, I highly recommend, but ONLY if you buy three boats for playing together and smashing into each other on purpose. You just have to clean them really good after playing. Lost all three propellers in 12 hours, but what do you expect with two 6-year-olds and a 10-year-old? Came with an extra propeller so that was nice. Purchased more propellers but have no idea if they will work with these or not.
