With Thanks From Gail** A: I've recently purchased this for our 4-year-old and can confirm that the images do rotate (four speeds available). It is reasonably quiet, you can hear a little bit of noise while it rotates - you can also opt for it to stand still. I think you can buy a separate adaptor, just a standard one, but I haven't done. It's still running on the batteries it came with and it's lasted really well. You set the images to rotate according to today's date and I like that function: you see exactly what your part of the sky looks like that time of year. It comes with discs for both Northern and Southern hemispheres which I also liked, in case your nephew wanted to see what it would look like on the other side of the globe! Hope this helps!
