Review: Ideal Package - Being a person who has not weight trained in 30 years and has never before used dumbbells I can definitely say that I am a total beginner. As often happens, I took some time reading reviews on desertcart and had narrowed my choice to two products. From my reading and reviews, it seems that cast iron weights are generally considered better and that even if you're semi-serious that considering vinyl, concrete or other types of weights were not the way to go. There were other products available but at what I considered silly prices given you're just lifting dumbbells. it's surprising just how much more you can spend on something as relatively straightforward as a dumbbell set and perhaps they have some particular merit I'm not aware of. but, for the likes of me who is no expert, competition body builder or going to fret over whether the weights supplied are precisely what they say they are then I believe this set is very good. After all, according to the desertcart ranking, the York 20 kg dumbbell set are number 1 in its category so they can't be bad. During my research I have learned that York has a fairly prominent name in the weight lifting industry and so this also played a part in finally selecting this product over the other contender. So, what was this other dumbbell set I was strongly considering? Well, it was the Confidence 20 kg dumbbell set and I was really torn between which set to purchase. The Confidence dumbbell set was cheaper by about £5 at the time of writing compared to the York version when also factoring in that free delivery was available with the York set and not on the Confidence one. Before continuing though, I must say for the sake of completeness that I also flirted with the idea of getting the chrome version of the York 20 kg set as I quite liked the look of a chrome set of weights as opposed to the rather bland black standard offerings and would even have paid the extra for it too. What made me decide against it was the apparent lack of any chrome plates sold as a separate extra set from York. So, having eliminated the chrome version from my shortlist I was left with the standard York 20 kg variety and the Confidence equivalent. When considering which set to purchase there were two elements to the York 20 Kg dumbbell set that I felt was an advantage. These were as follows. The rubber grip used rather than the traditional metal knurled one I feel is an advantage to the design of the York dumbbells. The rubber is hard and has quite a prominent pattern on it to maximise grip. This simple feature appealed to me given just how easily sweaty hands can slip on metal even when knurling is present. Unlike a barbell, a dumbbell can be hefted at all sorts of angles with one hand so grip is an important element to factor into the overall design. There is the valid argument that you could simply use weight training gloves to overcome this if using something like the Confidence set but that entails additional cost and negates the saving in price you make on purchasing the Confidence dumbbell set. Of course, such a design feature is of subjective value and at the end of the day the choice boils down to the individual. One reviewer mentioned that the rubber itself smells. Well, yes, it does, but it is very subtle and you can only detect it if you put your nose up to the grip so I'd say there is no problem in this regard based on my experience. The other key thing I liked about the York offering was the inclusion of a wall chart. This chart provides pictorial and written instructions on 15 key dumbbell exercises and also usefully, lists what muscle groups are worked by means of a category system to make selection of which type of workout to use easy. In addition, it also covers the very important and often overlooked warm up and stretching aspects that should form part of all training sessions. As beginners, proper stretching and warming up is all too often ignored and so this chart is in my view an invaluable aid to all those like me who are new to training with weights. Some might argue that you can obtain all this information via the Internet but the thing you need to be careful of is when you're a novice is unclear or incorrect information that the Internet can so often throw up at you. Plus, Given the reputation and experience of York within the industry, as a newcomer to lifting you can feel confident that the exercises depicted on this wall chart are correct. Finally, even if you are able to source clear and correct guides to these sorts of exercises you do not have the convenience of having all printed out for you so that you can follow without standing in front of a screen and stopping to click the next video etc. if you can find pictorial exercises on the Net then you have the expense of printing them out so this would impact any savings you might make on a cheaper set of dumbbells. The package arrived earlier today and it was compact perhaps being somewhere around 18 x 8 x 4 inches and secured with those flat plastic bands you need a sharp knife or scissors to cut off. A basic plain cardboard box is what the items came in. All the weights and two bars were packed well with the bars separated in their own side compartment. However, one negative aspect to the packaging was that although each group of the weight plates provided were wrapped in plastic, they were not sealed and so this could allow moisture to get into the unsealed packets over time. I would also like to have seen the outer cardboard also vacuum wrapped in plastic too or at least some sort of glossy sleeve slid over the box to help keep the packaging from absorbing moisture over time. I imagine such items may sit on warehouse shelves for years in all sorts of conditions and so a little more protection against damp would've been a good and rather cheap idea I think. Still, all seems fine. Four heavy mat finish plastic spin lock collars are provided that you simply screw along the heavy thread at each end of the dumbbell bar to hold the weights on. I have not yet used the weights and so cannot comment on how well they work but they seem quite sturdy. For anyone concerned about the use of plastic collars, bear in mind that you can purchase any compatible metal collar to use on these dumbbells so long as they are designed for the standard 1 inch or approximately 25 mm bar used. After unpacking I did notice a slight smell but that was likely the metal itself and the fact as mentioned above that I think some damp had entered the packaging as it was delivered on a cold wet day. A quick rub down with some wet wipes and all is well. Also included in the box is a sheet detailing all that should be included in the set so a simple but useful document for anyone like me who is new to all this. There is an aspect to this set and others available that some may not be aware of and that is the amount of weight provided in the form of the discs or more correctly termed "plates" in that although this is a 20 kg set, there are 17 kg of actual weight provided. The shortfall is made up by the actual weight of the dumbbell bars themselves plus the collars used to keep the weight plates in place. This is common in the industry and you will find as a beginner like myself that the weight you lift has to include the actual dumbbell or barbell and added hardware too. The weight plates included are as follows: 4 x 2.5 kg 4 x 1.25 Kg 4 x 0.5 Kg The dumbbell has quite a bit of room on the threaded part to place a number of weights on as I suspect you may be able to get all the plates on a single dumbbell if you're wanting to do work using just one at a time but don't quote me on that as I've not tried it. if you wanted to add more weight then you can purchase any standard 1 inch hole diameter weight plates. All plates are in black and have a thick flanged or rimmed edge around their circumference to make picking them up a bit easier. The manufacturer and weight in Kg of each plate is cast in heavy relief from the surface of the plate such that you can even identify the weight by touch if you're good at that sort of thing. Overall, what makes this York 20 kg dumbbell set a preferred choice over the Confidence 20 Kg set is that it is a better package especially for those like me who are new to lifting. The rubber hand grips and useful wall chart may be minor additions but provide that bit more for those who are new to lifting. I would have to say in fairness that if you are experienced, already have weight gloves perhaps and are knowledgeable about how to perform the exercise you do properly then the Confidence set may be a better choice given its lower price point.
Review: Solid Purchase. Great for Most Home Entry Workouts - Great quality dumbbells with cast iron plates and good grip thanks to the knurling. Versatile for curls, shoulder work, and tricep movements. Spinlocks can loosen slightly during some exercises, so consider alternate locks long term. Very easy to change weights and don't take up too much room. Good value for home gym users, and can be expanded with extra plates.
