The bricks are proper Lego pieces but mainly single and double as opposed to 6 or 8 circles on a piece if that makes sense. My 8 year old had this set, Buckingham Palace and New York City and we've had great fun building them over the past few days. You get a fantastic set of instructions too which explains the history behind each structure aswell as detailed instructions. It took my son about 4.5 hours to build by himself.
