Review: Size claims - I received these yesterday and because they seem a little too large, I will wear them around the house for a while. Looking at my Sketcher shoe sizes which are size 12 W, I first ordered these 12 wide. Way too big. I felt like a clown and tripped several times with them on. So, I returned them and ordered theses 11 W. Still they seem to be a tad too large but I will keep them for now. Next time I will first try the 10 W or 10 1/2 W if available. No matter, they must be the wide size. NOTE: I retired from the Air Force and the last few years of my career, I wore these kinds of boots. I really like the style, BUT, these ARE NOT the real thing, far from it. The real ones would cost much more, would be triple threaded on the seams, and have the official U.S. tag in them. None the less, these will do. I will keep them. I had to put foam padding in side as these are as hard as bricks to your foot. If you don't, good luck. Since putting double strips of padding in mine, it makes them now feel something like the real thing. Much of comfortable.
Review: Absolutely fantastic boots - but old school - So to be clear, these are fantastic boots and there is a reason they stayed in services for 40 years (or so). Once broken in, they are wonderfully comfortable. The ability to walk out moisture is great, and the ankle support when crossing rocky ground with a load is excellent. They are built true to spec, and no different than the military issue ones from the past. Exactly the same on the inside too. Now keep in mind, you'll need to break them in. A lot. Do not skip this step or you'll have blisters the size of Texas on your tootsies. While modern boots (like my Solomans) are almost as comfortable as sneakers the day you buy them, these need more love become comfortable. And it will take a while to break them in, no skipping that. They are old school and the leather starts much like plastic. But once broken in they will last years. The panama soles work as designed. I just came back from traipsing around in the mud (pouring rain, cold day, mud up to my ankles) and the mud just fell out of the treads as I walked. I was carrying a load and the ankle support was nice too.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good quality control makes a big difference.

I tempered my judgement of size expectations based on the knowledge that feet get a bit wider as we age. Wipe that smirk off your face, you ain't getting any younger. Way back, when dinosaurs roamed the earth, I was a consistent 8W or 9R so I ordered the 8W and they are a bit tight in width. I have confidence that these will stretch enough to be truly comfortable. This is only minor and proper jungle boot first-wearing and break-in procedures have prevented any serious soreness. First serious wearing fill the boots with fresh water, allow to drain through the drain holes slowly for several minutes, dump the excess, put them on laced tighter than normal, go for a long walk. If you take them off and they are still moist, remove any insoles so they can dry. After wearing wet, use a good shoe polish as this nourishes the leather and helps prevent cracking. A light smear of neatsfoot oil is the gold standard for keeping leather soft but don't use too much or too often as it can become an oily mess or stretch too much. Never use any heat more powerful than sunlight to dry them. Hint: These units have no insoles so form-fitted cushion insoles are a good idea for dry conditions and hiking on hard surfaces. Insoles with stiff plastic blades help with arch support. If you are going to be in a lot of water it pays to find a pair of Saran mesh insoles. They maintain an air-gap and help drain the water so the boots and feet dry quickly. Surplus Army Warehouse sells them by the dozen cheap as "GI Insoles 8R 12 Pairs". They are not designed to add cushioning, just to get air under the foot to aid air circulation and prevent rot. Original GI issue boots in the 70s and 80s, jungle and regular, came with these "shredded wheat" insoles. They help a lot in any boot if it is hot or wet. Note on quality: Of three manufacturers of these boots I have experience with the Rothco version seems far superior. The quality of materials is nearly identical from all manufacturers. As far as I know they could all be manufactured in the same plant and they look the same. The differences are mainly a matter of quality control inspection and rejecting items with small but serious flaws. A set of "Mil-spec" boots I bought from SG is typical. The left boot is well put together and seemingly quite durable. The right had the heel come unattached after a very few miles of light walking. Same materials, perhaps the Rothco sole is a bit better moulding and it sports a brand impression, but the non-Rothco boots are hit-or-miss on how they are put together. If you are lucky you get a good boot. If not ... Note that the difference is not necessarily easy to spot. The defective heel joint on the "Mil-spec" SG boot was smeared with some sort of black caulk to disguise the loose joint and looked only a bit sloppy, but otherwise okay. Six miles of light walking later and a quarter-inch gap had opened up and the heel was starting to flap. Live and learn. Along that same line the Rothco boots seams at the sole look tight and neat, a good sign, but I will only know for sure in time. After a dozen miles they are still solid. Jungle boots are not for everyone. The soles are thinner and more flexible than most boots. They are a more than adequate 5/16" at their thinnest but feel more like athletic shoes than boots. There are also 9 eyelets on each side. Next time I might swing for the speed-laces.
