The body itself goes 4in+ into the water so with that extra 6in adjustable tube (that gets almost 12in when extended) it didn't fit in my tank with the 4+in intake section connected **Q: Can this be used for an Axolotl?** A: Yes. I use that for my axolotl fir about 2 months. No problem. Very good. **Q: Will this model of the Tetra is 45 handle a 55 gallon ok?** A: The 45 model would not be enough for a 55 gallon tank on its own.
