This is how all edge banding works, btw. 2. Cut the length you need from the roll, and have a little bit of overhang on both ends. Secure the piece of roll material in place with some masking tape, to keep the roll material centered to the shelf's exposed edge. This is to hold the roll material in place to keep it from shifting, or becoming unaligned from the shelf.
