I was skeptical about StarDock (books and covers), but I have used this day in and day out for over a year now and never a problem finding it on OS X or Windows 7 Ultimate. Knocked off half the star for having to go and buy an external power source - though I knew it was meant to be a hard-wire from the outset. RAID, flash drives, HIDs all in a day's work. Once in a great awhile a device doesn't read for some reason but it sorts itself out with the exception of a LaCie Rugged (USB 3/Thunderbolt), on which I depend, and hence the other half of the missing star.

There is no power adapter available anywhere.

This box is top notch as far as quality - the box is black painted metal with mounting flanges, and comes with little metal clips for mounting to a rail. It comes with a male-A to male-B USB 3.0 cable for attaching to your computer.However, be careful! It does *NOT* come with a power cord, and Startech does not make, sell, nor suggest anything as a solution! After a chat session, I found that to fully power the 7 USB 3.0 devices, you need a AC to DC power adapter that outputs 40 volts and 6.3 amps. I've searched all over and haven't found any solution - there is no laptop power adapter that is suitable. If I could buy a power cord for the box, I'd give it 5 stars. But as it is, I'm giving it 2 on account that I can't use the thing. At this point, I wish I had gotten something else.What I've done is I bought: http://www.amazon.com/A200-ST2043-A355D-S6889-A505-S69803-L305D-S5869-L305D-S59222/dp/B0080E6U20/ref=sr_1_77?ie=UTF8&qid=1360113158&sr=8-77&keywords=40v+6a+dc which has DC-Output : 19V-6.3A-120W. That wouldn't be enough to fully power all the ports, but might power half of them... I cut the end off the power adapter and plugged the wires into the terminal block that StarTech provides.StarTech says that the power light only comes on if the unit is plugged into the computer. The light does not come on if it is only plugged into the power adapter. StarTech confirms this.This is all plugged in and nothing has blown up yet. There are a couple of interesting SuperUser posts about USB powering:[...](it won't let me paste links here...)[...]As for Startech, the person in their chat-support was patient and willing to help, but did not have a viable solution to the problem, and didn't promise anything.[UPDATE March 5,2013]Folks, I returned this device (much credit to the seller, Adventurer's Bag for being so helpful!) and instead, I purchased this:http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009NESU4M/ref=pe_175190_21431760_M3T1_ST1_dp_2It is a 10-port metal-encased USB 3.0 drive by Orico that does come with a 12v-4amp power adapter.I don't know if it is a characteristic of USB 3.0 adapters, but with these last two devices (the Startech and the Orico), when you plug a device into a different port, it has to install the drivers again for THAT port. It's not like what you are used to on a computer's USB 2.0 ports where you can plug a device in once and it is always recognized after that. No, with these hubs at least, each port is treated as a separate entity. But after you have plugged the devices into the port, the computer will remember it on THAT port. That means in order for the computer to remember the device on every port, you have to plug it into every port.

Perfect for our uses, useful undocumented features

We purchased this for use in an industrial prototype. It has performed flawlessly for our uses.As some have noted, the power supply issue may confuse non-technical users. If you are a non-technical user here is what you need to know: (1) almost any power supply that provides *ANYTHING* between 7 and 40 Volts is fine. The device actually regulates that down to what it needs internally. The range is deliberate, to give you a wide variety of options. If you have the choice, go for the lower end of the range. (2) The device does not require external power (by default it is bus-powered, despite showing up as non-bus powered. Do be aware that you'll have to cut the end off the power supply cord and use the supplied screw terminal to connect to the hub.Technical users should be aware of two issues:(1) It is technically 2 4-port hubs connected serially internally. Bus-powered hubs are actually not allowed to be connected in serial, which may be why the device pretends it is self-powered even when running off bus power (when external power is not supplied).(2) You can force the device to be only self-powered by setting jumpers inside the enclosure. As with other Startech hubs this is undocumented and their technical support will not help you with this. Nevertheless if you open up the device you will find three jumpers: J1, J2, J3. These have two settings: (S) self powered aka the external connector and (B) bus powered aka the usb line from the computer. J1 is located on the lower board and has precedence. From the factory it is set as (B), so that the device stays on via bus-power even when external power is removed. Changing this to (S) allows you to turn the bus off by removing the external power. J2 and J3 are on the upper board. Changing them does affect how they report (if you have software to configure the usb devices you will see it changes from self to bus powered as you change the jumper). However the actual ports behave based on the setting from J1.
