Review: Low Dose Is The Way To Go! - I was made aware of low dose melatonin when I was looking for an effective sleep aid for my elderly father who was having trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep through the night. There have been clinical studies which show that the effective dose for most adults for melatonin supplementation is 300mcg, MUCH lower than what is found on shelves at your local store. In this case, less is more. Here's why - a normally functioning pineal gland in the brain produces an average of around 300mcg of melatonin at the part of a 24 hour circadian rhythm cycle where sleep is triggered. So, if you flood your system with any MUCH higher dose than this nominal amount, you most likely will do more harm than good; disrupting your own endogenous melatonin production, causing more problems than you intended to solve in the first place. This manufacturer specifies that this product is recommended for occasional use, so as not to promote reliance. Once normal rhythm is restored, you may only need it once in a while. I find this product to be reliably effective, especially for those times when I wake up in the early morning hours and can't get back to sleep on my own. The pills are small, and I find the most effective way to take them is to place one under my tongue and let it dissolve, which gets it into the bloodstream faster. There is no taste to them, although they have a fine granularity once dissolved - not unpleasant at all. Within 30 minutes, I'm back to sleep, every time. **Q: Can you split the tablet in half for a smaller dose?**
A: The tablet is quite small and not scored to be cut so you might have trouble getting a very accurate split, but it could be done.

**Q: It says packaged and tested in the USA,  but what is the country of origin?**
A: As marked on the label on the bottle: "Carefully manufactured by Carlyle Nutritionals LLC, Melville, NY 11747 USA." : )

**Q: This is not slow or sustained release, correct?**
A: Does not seem to be a sustained release, but works nicely.

**Q: Is this melatonin USP verified?**
A: I don’t know if it’s verified but in my opinion didn’t work well.  I’ve had much better results With Sundown Brand.  You can’t find the Sundown 300 mcg right now.  Their liquid version does the trick though.

Most melatonin products on the market come in very high doses, so I really appreciated that this one is available in a low dose that I can easily adjust by adding or reducing pills. After experimenting with different amounts over a few weeks, I found the perfect dose for me and I love it is much lower than the “mega-doses” most other brands offer.
