They are permanent holes in the back for a large headed screw or nail to enter. No strings or wires are needed I bought the 30 X36 inch size and have it hung horizontally over my 36" vanity. It is very thin and of course doesn't have a frame around the edge. It is very pretty and looks great in my new bathroom. I asked the contractor if I needed to support the bottom with clear mirror or glass support hangers and he said "no".
