Since you have already ordered it, try it out, you might be pleasantly surprised. My wife has Macular Degeneration and loves this lamp. We have been using it on (the same) battery power since December. The LEDs are bright and make a huge difference. I also purchased a table top lamp (different mfr) that is equally as good and useful for reading or working at the table. I use it for machine and hand quilting as well as machine & hand sewing. I also use it for beading and reading. The area is covers isn't big so you have to adjust it as you go but that's super easy given it's easily bendable accordion neck & actually makes staying on track easier. I even angle it in front of my sewing machine so I can see clearly when doing machine embroidery & pretty much everything else. The light isn't bright enough to use alone in a dark room but a nearby lamp or other light source should be used anyway. Never use these lamps with no other light source in the room. I love my lamp. It's everything I hoped for and more. You get 100,000 hours of light with this lamp. The lights can't be replaced that I can see. I've had mine for a very long time now, use it about 8 - 10 hours a day and it's still going strong. **Q: Is this lamp base heavy enough that it won't topple every time you need to move the magnifier?** A: I put my foot on the base to readjust the angle etc. (bending the neck) Otherwise the handle, on the light lets me move it around easily. I have not had a tipping problem. I really love this lamp. **Q: how do I open the battery department to replace batteries** A: The battery compartment on mine is actually quite easy to open. I can just slip my nails in the crack at the top back and push slightly and it slips right off. You could also use the tip of a butter knife or something similar to slip in the crack and nudge it open, then it will simply slide off. She spends a lot of time on her toes grooming them. This is perfect for that when sitting in a chair. The main magnifier is large, well illuminated, and has adequate magnification for most tasks. We use it with the 3 D cell batteries instead of using the plug in supply as that is much more convenient in the bathroom. Those heavy batteries in the base also help prevent it from tipping over. My wife likes the magnifier. By the way when assembling the unit, the upright pipes are male threaded on one end - with a temporary shipping plastic ring over the male threaded end that you remove before assembly. The bottom pipe screws into the base - no tools required, just good hand tightness. I point this out because one reviewer thought it just “pushed in” which would not be very secure. The good: (1) Perfect size to use seated with the magnifier on the floor. (2) large magnifier and good lighting. (3) Easy to use. (4) Uses D cells which should last a long time. The bad: Nothing really Could Use Improvement: The little inset in the magnifier that provides higher magnification is quite small and almost useless for most tasks because it is so small.
