I have seen people use coco coir which is made from coconut husks. Finally if you grow larger seeds, like sunflower or peas, you can use it without any paper **Q: are the holes small enough to hold barley seeds** A: I don't use the paper or a paper towel for barley or wheat grass seeds. The seeds are large enough that they don't slip through. **Q: Can someone tell me if the mesh tray will hold very small seeds such as radish and alalpha ? This mesh looks very large and most likely will not work** A: Comes with sheets of paper. Put paper on mesh tray. Sprinkle your small seeds ( not too tightly as they stick together when wet). Use a spray bottle and spray the seeds. Make sure paper is damp.
