Review: Pro-level quality, entry-level price tag - I’m going to be real here and admit that this wasn’t my first choice in mics, but I had to know how it would stack up against the SM58s I’m used to. In terms of feel, sound quality, features, and includes equipment, at worst, it’s a dead heat. Compared to its vastly more expensive counterpart, ambient noise rejection is identical, pickup pattern also identical, the Behringer has a very slightly darker natural tone (nothing that can’t be compensated for with a little EQ-tweaking), the weight and feel are practically identical, and really, the only area where it notably falls behind is that it has fairly little shock resistance, but a) this can be combatted with a decent stand and/or shockmount and b) it is absolutely unbeatable for the price. I’ve had a long run of good luck with Behringer, but even so, I was skeptical of this mic starting out; the run continues.

I compared it against one of my Shure Beta 58a mics and can honestly say it the Behringer BA 58a held its ground against the Shure. Similar output and sound quality. Of course the Beta 58A is a better mic but not 10 times better. I'm going to start substituting the BA 85a when I so sound for outdoor parties and give a hard listen and see if anyone can tell the difference.

Behringer makes clone. Period. They are shameless in their attempts to duplicate other companies' products and then sell them at a much lower price point. They hit about as often as they miss. The BA 85A is a miss, but just barely. It's an attempt at recreating the Shure Beta 58A supercardioid vocal microphone and it succeeds on many accounts. It is a handheld microphone that has a supercardioid pattern and it resembles the Shure mic. That's about it. It doesn't sound bad, but it doesn't sound like a Beta 58A either. It sounds like a more modern and hyped XM8500, which I guess is a good thing. The little blue band around the ball filter basket likes to pull off and disappear. Good mic and if you can get it at the right price, it's a decent addition to your toy chest.
