Update: I think I've figured out that what happens: I think the batteries inside the controller weaken because I can't use the sound FX right now, but it still controls the train. When I turn the train on it doesn't have the train sounds either, but it still runs. I'm certain this will be fixed replacing the batteries, but I'm mentioning this because it is kind of a cool unintentional feature, because now I have the train still running and it isn't as noisy. So I think the batteries on the train last a while, but you just may need to replace the controller ones. I definitely recommend the train! My husband and I discussed grabbing this for him for Xmas, but we were able to snag one from desertcart Warehouse at a great price, so we purchased early -- what an excellent decision! To start, this train is way larger than I anticipated, which was a great surprise! The quality is excellent and it's incredibly easy to set up -- everything I would expect from a Lionel product. Ignore the reviews saying it's "too hard to keep this on the track" and "the train keeps popping off the track. Some people obviously have no idea how a train works and it shows -- you have to be smarter than the toy. You literally line up the wheels on the track, and you're off for hours of playtime. It took us all of 60 seconds to connect all four cars together and line them up on the tracks. The train does not pop off the tracks, regardless of whether its going full speed or super slow. The sounds are great quality, and the controls are user friendly. My only complaint is that the battery door on the locomotive is a bit annoying to get off. Otherwise, this is a solid investment -- it is worth the price you pay even when it is offered at full price. The set I received was much nicer and of higher quality than I would have expected given many of the negative reviews. I think you just need to know what to expect for what you are paying (for me, that was about $75) It worked properly out of the box. The track fit together just fine and it fit around what is about a 7 foot tree. I would recommend setting it up on a flat service as the engine has a bit of a tough time getting up any significant incline. I had it on a hard wood floor going up onto a rug and then back down. It slowed a bit, but made it around. The connections between cars are a little weak sometimes and can let loose. I fixed this pretty easily by just using a bit of scotch tape. The sounds and remote control are a nice touch and work very well. Overall know what to expect. For the price point, it is a nice little set. It is for someone who just wants a train to set up during the holidays, but maybe something a bit more than just the cheap set you can buy at your local drug store. It is not meant for any kind of serious hobbyist or collector. It is not very expandable so if you want more, I would suggest looking at a more expensive set which I will probably do once my son is a bit older and can appreciate it.
