Damaged side walls: If you hammer directly onto the side wall (your bottom pegs are in place, and you’re hammering down your side wall to lock the perpendicular panel in place) you will split the veneer. Place a larger object (I had a ream of paper nearby), perpendicular to the surface you need to hammer and this should protect your walls from any damage happening. Organize your shelves first: Took another poster’s advice and removed a shelf divider to allow for an unopened ream of paper to sit on the bottom-most position. The individual shelf separators higher up will bend slightly if you put something heavy on them. I don’t think they’d be in danger of breaking, but if wavy lines bother your visual aesthetic, I’d consider placing the heaviest object on the bottom. The backing - I chose to skip it. For my needs, I was placing this organizer against the back wall of a larger bookcase shelf so I didn’t need to install the back piece. This allows me the option to customize the space in between each divider as it suits me. The unit does wobble very slightly, but in my case, this unit is tucked away in a location that adults have access to. I’m not under the impression that the entire unit will slide sideways and break without the backing, the unit is sturdy enough. Height - Width - Depth ? cannot tell which is which . needs to fit in small area** A: The measurements cited here are not consistent with the photograph, which shows items such as an 8.5x11" pad lying on a shelf on it's long dimension, with plenty of room to spare. There's another shelf which appears to display file folders. This gives the impression that the width is well over 11". **Q: what are the dimensions of the compartments?** A: The compartment dimensions are 1 1/2" height x 9 3/4" wide and 12" depth. If you are stacking 8 1/2"x11", 20lb regular printing papers, you may be able to keep approximately 375 papers in one compartment. I keep less than 100 at a time. If you are storing postcards, coupons, invoices, mails, receipts, tax papers etc, it fills up fast and total number of papers you can stack will be significantly less. Semi-circle cutout at front shelf helps you pull your papers out. However, if you are an attorney or a doctor, you want to consider other larger solutions. **Q: can you remove some shelves in order to create a larger compartment?** A: There are a total of 11 shelves. The shelves have an opening of 1.25 inches. A shelf can be removed to double that space. They are cheaply made for the price. Not the greatest quality. One had a fiberboard back the other didn't so it was open on the back. One had insertable pegs, the other had instructions (tiny print) to soak a different type peg in water prior to install.
