Look somewhere else if you want a reliable safe that will last many years. I will echo what others have said about the safe being fragile and weak. The hinges and latches are all made of cheap plastic, the key is made of some super lightweight metal that might as well be plastic, the safe offers almost no physical security, and instead of inspiring confidence I am constantly worried that this safe will destroy my documents due to moisture build-up. Furthermore, on my second use, the key snapped in half and the company wants a fortune to replace it -- I am now worried about the longevity of the product as a whole and that the product will become completely useless should the second key break as well. I thought that spending a bit more money on this brand over something like SentrySafe would net me a higher quality product, but I was SO wrong. I will never purchase another product from FireKing. I've used SentrySafe products for decades and I've never had a single issue with them. This unit itself is very heavy (and it comes with a Prop. 65 warning- so maybe it's made of lead), which makes it pretty hard to move around and use under normal circumstances. The requirement that the safe be opened and aired out is ridiculous (especially due to the weight), but if you don't do it then all of your super important documents/items will get mold or moisture damage. In an attempt to remedy this design defect I purchased silica moisture absorbers, which added to the overall cost of the unit, but I am still constantly worried about this safe destroying my family's passports, birth certificates, social security cards, and other irreplaceable documents. Check out many of the other reviews that discuss this problem at length. This isn't a product that you can keep hidden away and only access a couple times a year, so considering that you'll need to be using/opening this particular brand of safe every week (other brands don't have these same issues), the cheap plastic parts are even more concerning. On only my second time opening this safe, the key sheared off in the lock. I was slowly moving the safe from the "upright" position to being flat on the floor so that I could air it out, and the key (while in the lock) hit my shoe. It didn't fall, it wasn't moving at a high rate of speed, none of that -- but the key snapped in half under the weight of the product itself. Fortunately I was able to get the broken key piece of out the lock so I could get to my documents, but this is clearly another design defect. I reached out to the customer service department to ask about getting a replacement key and received no response for more than two weeks. I sent a follow-up request 16 days later asking again for a replacement or to at least let me know which key blank to use so I could get a new key made. I was told that I HAD TO purchase the Sure Seal keys from FireKing, that they were running about 2-3 weeks on backorder, and that they were $35 per set of 2 keys (and there is no online option available to order these keys). Now I'm not a locksmith, but I do know a thing or two about locks. This product offers absolutely no physical security (except maybe from young children) and can literally be opened with a paperclip. The key itself is SUPER low security and SUPER low quality, and I would be shocked if it wasn't a generic key purchased in bulk for a few cents each. It's probably available on ebay but you have to know the key blank name to find it (which FireKing won't provide). The fact that they want to charge $35 for two keys is insane, but I'm guessing that a lot of people pay it because they don't know any better or maybe think the key for their safe is actually unique (it's not). (As a side note, it does look like FireKing has some higher-security offerings using Medeco and Tubar locks -- these keys are more complicated to make and are generally pretty unique. Getting a set of these high-security keys also costs $35 for two and I would not have a problem paying that for these keys. These keys are also made out of quality metal so they don't snap in half under light pressure.) I would have no problems paying $5 or maybe even $10 for a set of replacement keys, which should cover the cost of the keys themselves, the postage, and the labor to mail them. I will certainly not pay $35, especially considering the high probability that they will break again in the future. What would be ideal is that FireKing could spend a few more cents for each key and actually include keys with the product that don't snap in half, potentially rendering the safe useless and your documents inaccessible. It might sound like I'm frustrated -- and I am. I will GLADLY pay more for a quality product that will serve me well for many years (especially one made in the USA), but this is an unacceptable design defect that FireKing seems to be using to milk more money from their customers. After receiving the response from FireKing customer service, I let them know that I wouldn't be paying $35 for two replacement keys and instead I would just send the product back to Amazon and write a review warning other potential customers of the issue. On the threat of a negative review, the CS rep did reach out to her supervisor to ask how she should handle the issue and the supervisor did offer to send a set of replacement keys at no charge (when they were back in stock). Fortunately (or unfortunately?) the CS rep forwarded me the whole email chain where I could see the supervisor's response: "It was his error that he broke the key but he is not going to see it this way. So do not even go there with him on this issue." Clearly FireKing takes no responsibility for a badly designed and defective product. I have lost all confidence in this product to protect my most valuable documents and I will be declining the offer of a free replacement key.
