Now, I live in an apartment and I have 2 cats and I a granddaughter. This dog has, shall we say, minimal training and she's been known to nip when she feels threatened. So I kinda have my hands full with this dog. Sadly my father and step mom adopted this dog and she would have been a project for a seasoned dog trainer.... they were definitely in over their heads with her as they are NOT dog trainers. She has always been wary of strangers and nips at their legs/etc if they turn their back on her.... bad enough with a grown adult, but if she does this with my Granddaughter or her friends, we're going to have trouble. She has almost no exposure to kids so that alone is a pretty big challenge. On top of that she's got a chase urge and hasn't been around cats in about 8 years. One of my cats is a real "scaredy cat" who hides if you look at him sideways just to complicate matters. I have a lot of work ahead of me. When I knew I was going to have to take her on along with my father, I started researching gate options. I need something that will hold her in (thankfully she doesn't test these things though!), while allowing my father to get through with minimal struggle. His mobility is pretty compromised (he uses a Rollator) and he's a fall risk so he has to be able to get through easily. I realized I likely needed more than one gate. And I realized that until the dog was here, I really wasn't sure exactly how it would work out. When I saw this gate/yard, I knew it was my answer to my problems. I have tons of options with this so as things (hopefully) change I can alter how we set this up. After trying multiple configurations I ended up with 4 panels at one end of the long living room to lock the dog in both when we go out (she will crap if left in a large enough space) as well as a place to put her if we have company to keep them safe while she's learning her manners. We have 3 more panels at the other end of the room to keep her in with us most of the time while allowing the cats a safe space where they can get to their litter and food. (It's ended up also being great for keeping one of my cats from escaping through my sliding door when I'm Bar-B-Quing!) The only thing I haven't used is the actual gate because my father's Rollator won't go through it, but that's ok - it may come in handy in the future. We will be moving to a house soon, so I love that I can take this with us and adapt it to the new space. There are 2 different heights available on Amazon, and if you're not looking specifically for the height, you'll end up with an extra set of useless pieces like we did. **Q: Can the door on the gate be installed on either end or must it only be in the middle?** A: Can be installed in almost any position keeping in mind the configuration is a set of two panels makes up a section and you may have to move caps on the bottom coupler. I have 3 of the extra long sets and have used them in different places in the house. I combined 2 sets to make a 25' divider with a single door in the middle and the other two doors on two gates to keep the dog out of the dining room. Very configurable, just loosen the top bolt all the way and pull the rod out. **Q: Once the hardware is mounted to the walls, how hard is it to remove the panels? We need a fence that can be up and down at various times.** A: Not very easy if you want to remove it completely because it's screwed into the walls (my setup). Continuously unscrewing and screwing it back in will lead to the holes wallowing out. You do have the option of removing everything but the two panels attached to the wall. The mechanism(s) on the panels that allow them to pivot can be completely removed allowing you to remove the gate portion. It's not ideal but it's probably better than ruining your walls by screwing and unscrewing the brackets. Depending on what you are mounting the gate to, you could probably put some permanent mounts in place in place allowing for easy removal on a regular basis. **Q: Do the joints lock into place? Versatile system and great quality. *by A***3 on June 26, 2016* I ordered this play yard/gate system to block off a portion of my covered carport to give my two puppies a play area outdoors. There is also access to my fenced backyard from the carport. I actually bought two of these, thinking I would need extra panels and a second gate for convenience. But after I set one of them up, I believe this arrangement of using only one will work out fine. I will just use the 2nd play yard/gate indoors to block off portion(s) of the house. The pups are quite young still, so management of their freedom indoors and outside is key. I am very happy with both the appearance and functionality of the play yard. It works fantastically well for the purpose I wanted, and it looks very nice, too. I've had it set up for 4 days and the puppies are really enjoying their play area. So far I have not permanently attached either end of the fence. I need to leave one end detachable so that I can drive my riding mower in and out of the carport. The other end could be permanently fastened to the house siding, but for now I just have it stabilized with large patio stones... one on each side of the fence, so that pups can't nudge it away from the wall. On the opposite end I used caribiners and screw eyes to attach it to a post, so that it can be quickly disengaged and moved out of the way. Once I'm sure this is where I want to keep it, I will probably use the mounting hardware that is attached to it, and go ahead and secure one end to the house. (the birdbath you see in picture is for my fat cat to launch herself over the fence, lol. She first tried to squeeze her head between the bars, but no go. That scared me for a second. Thought I might have to call the Fire Dept to get her unstuck! Luckily she didn't keep trying, and did not get stuck) The gate is easy to open and close, and while it is not especially wide, it's fine for me. I don't bother securing the latch with the red safety catch, like you should do for children. I can very easily operate the latch with one hand. I just let it rest on top of red catch, instead of pulling that red safety catch back and securing the latch under it. I think this is a great system for puppy management. Very versatile and well made! Like other reviewers have stated, be sure to loosen top knobs before repositioning, so that you don't break the plastic.
