This enclosure would need to be connected to a computer in order to properly power on and rebuild the RAID after a failure. **Q: If one drive fails, is it as easy as just pulling the failed drive and adding a new one if configured in Raid 1?** A: Yes - though pulling involves powering the unit down and disassembling it, especially if the failed drive is in bay #1. It no longer matters which bay the new drive is in - the unit will rebuild to the empty drive.
