Unfortunately you cannot leave out a section of the Trinity in order to reduce the height because the threaded rods provided, which support the legs, come in one piece. I am not saying anything regards the manufacturers recommendation for weight bearing on the shelves above which clearly would then have less support but it worked fine for me (wanted to put a desktop PC in the bottom of one of the 2 racks I bought).
