You need to space the blocks out so there is an air gap between them. Otherwise, if the blocks are touching or very close to each other the roots can cross over between blocks creating a problem. With even spacing (of about 3/8" - 1/2") you can get 4 blocks to a row times 9 rows or a total of 36 blocks per tray. **Q: Do you have to purchase the plastic seed pins separately? If so, what size? Or, does this come with everything needed to begin seeding?** A: The Mini 4 comes with 5/8" seed pins already inserted. You need nothing else to start making soil blocks and planting seeds.....until you want to start nesting soil blocks from the Micro 20 to the Mini 4. It is well made and will last a long time. I'm referring to the cost in comparison to the cheep potting tray setups. Compared to a $5 seed starting kit it's more but in the long run it's going to save you money. My point is that yes, your can do things for less but this product is a fantastic investment. I want to encourage people that may view the cost in comparison to the less expensive options to give it a try. Got tired of all the plastic pots and trays, so I thought I would give this a try. I love it. You have to plan ahead a bit to get the soil mixed just right, but once you do it's easy to make these soil blocks. I think the mix is about 50/50 ratio of water to seed starting soil, and you let it sit awhile until the water is soaked in pretty good. I put the blocks on a grid tray and they are ready for seeds. The cool thing, is when you are ready to plant outside, you just plant the whole block.
