Most Americans drink their beer too cold anyway, which numbs the taste buds, so this gave a good effect. I did this and the layering was just about as good as could possibly be achieved. You do have to pour the Guinness slowly, and it's a good idea to start doing so it while the stout is still a bit frothy. Plus, if there's a bit of a head on the bottom beer, that seems to break the fall of the stout and retard the mixing. I've never seen a sharper demarcation line in the most authentic Irish pub.
