Review: Works great but dang they are expensive! - I continue to buy these for the sole reason that they have the best filtration available compared to all of the generics on eBay and desertcart. I did all the research so you don't have to. Bottom line, the generics do not meet the same filtration standards as the OEM filter, which really sucks because they are so darn expensive. Even buying them in bulk barely saves you any money. This is a total rip-off but what do you expect from GE? :/ oh, and make sure you watch YouTube videos on how to properly replace them. It is not intuitive and you can definitely break something if you start yanking on it. Frankly, one of the stupidest designs I've ever seen. Last but not least, I'm an insurance adjuster and I have seen those generic filters fail, flooding people's kitchens so take that into account as well. As much as it pains me to say this, just suck it up and pay the premium for the original GE for the peace of mind and knowing you're getting better filtration.

**Q: GE water filter "RPWF"...**
A: No doubt the filter's life depends on your water supply and GE likes getting $50 for a $15 filter. 
I change mine when I notice an "off" taste in the ice and ignore the light.

**Q: Will this fit my French door GE?**
A: My GE refrigerator is GFE28HGHWW.  It was installed by the local dealer with RPWFE water filter.  The Quick Use & Care Manual shows how to install it, but gives no information about the filter model and when to change it.  What I have deduced is that at initial turn-on a 6-month clock is started, but not visible.  At 6-months the display shows a message to change the filter.  If you do not do that, the display will start to count up days overdue.  It does this for 99 days and then stops counting, although water is still available OK via the over-used filter.  The new filter must be RPWFE because it has a RFID electronic chip taped to its back side.  The chip is about 1/4" diameter and it talks to the refrigerator electronics, resets the display and starts a new 6-month clock.  The display cannot be reset manually.  The new filter must be installed with the front side facing outwards, so that the chip on the backside interfaces properly with the electronics.  A RPWF filter (without the E) looks exactly the same, installs exactly the same, but does not work - the water feed system shuts down.  The answer to your question is if your refrigerator came with a RPWFE filter, then its replacement must also be RPWFE.  You should check what is installed now by opening the filter door and looking at the filter label.  Replace it with exactly the same filter.

**Q: Does this filter have rfid chip on it?**
A: Yes.

I would not use an after-market filter. But if you don’t want to use this filter, you can buy a bypass plug from GE for $7.30 (WR17X22064).

**Q: Does it say what it is NSF certified for?**
A: NSF used to mean National Sanitation Foundation, go to http://www.nsf.org/about-nsf/

I continue to buy these for the sole reason that they have the best filtration available compared to all of the generics on eBay and Amazon. I did all the research so you don't have to.
