Nothing I have ever tried has worked, summer is the worst, full of algae all season long. As well as being able to see to the bottom and my animals again, the walls of the pond are clear from the thick algae that was growing. I don't have any plants in my pond, as the turtles eat them the instant I put anything in, so I can't speak to the safety of plants but the turtles, goldfish and mosquito fish are all a-ok.I know, it doesn't look great, but if you had seen it before... Fish and turtles were not visible 2 days ago. I will post another picture/time frame once it is clear. Second picture you can see the bottom of my pond.
