Pulling back all the way suddenly makes the crawler jump forward and wheely, but within a few minutes my son had figured out how to start slowly and accelerate so that the tracks stay on the ground. The turning is really fun because you pivot the crawler in place in addition to making traditional turns. We found everything pictured in our box along with brief instructions. We were fooled at first, because the charging cable is stored inside the battery compartment when the toy arrives (see second picture). We find that about 2 hours of charging is sufficient. The indicator lights (red/green) on the charging cable help to know when the battery is fully charged. The crawler also reveals when it's low on battery.
