I can finally connect the music on my hard drive to my old analog audio system

*by G***T on Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2016*

I bought the Music Streamer III after searching the internet for a product that would allow me to interface my PC (with over 18,000 songs loaded on my HD), with my circa 1980 high-end analog audio component system (i.e., poweramp, preamp, speakers). I should mention that the sound card on my PC is built in to the motherboard, so no options to connect that way. I had previously tried to connect the computer to my preamp using an RCA Y-adapter to the 3.5mm headphone plug, but that sounded just horrible. After finding the Music Streamer online, I called High Resolution Technologies customer service to ensure I was getting the product I needed. The representative answered almost immediately and was very patient, knowledgeable, and thorough. He mentioned that the Music Streamer III does not come with a USB cable, and recommended that I get the Belkin Gold Series 24K gold-plated A/B USB connector in the shortest length needed. I got the 6 foot. He also recommended using a good quality RCA cable (which I already had). I'm running Windows 10 and the the Music Streamer III was recognized and drivers self-installed seamlessly. I followed their simple setup instructions (from a PDF on their website: [...] ). The sound is nothing less than fantastic!! And even songs that I'd previously down-converted from CD quality to 192 bit rate (to fit on my iPod Shuffle) actually sound quite good too. I called customer support once more to ask about switching between my audio component system speakers and my computer speakers, as I don't always need to play music, and didn't want to have to turn on the stereo system every time I use the computer. I was instructed to either switch the default speakers via the control panel sound setting (I just put a shortcut to that on my desktop), or simply unplug the USB connector to the Music Streamer and the computer speakers will take over. I again reached the same helpful support person and he encouraged me to call anytime if I had other issues or concerns, which, so far, I don't. There may be other options out there to accomplish what the Music Streamer III does, I don't know. But I do know that I couldn't be any happier with this purchase!!

I kept looking and looking for a way to stream my extensive music collection off of my linux computer, using my 'old school' two channel amps. I stumbled onto this device after looking at a lot of different potential DACS (Digital to Audio Converter). It works marvelously and sounds even better. You take your laptop (mine is an oldish T400 running Ubuntu 15.04 Mate) and plug the streamer into the computer's USB port. This attaches to the HRT device. From there, you 'output' your typical RCA cables to your amp. Prior to this, I used to just plug an earphone jack that pigtailed into RCA cables (red/white) into the AMP. What a difference this device makes! And it's so easy. Don't let anyone tell you, you can't use your old school receiver (I have many of these, but mostly employ my Harmon Kardon HK VXI 990 - circa 1989, which originally cost $1,299 and using an inflation indexer would cost in today's dollars $2,300...which I purchased on a famous auction site for about $150). The best part is I can just click up a sound using Audacious music player software on Linux, and stream it to Polk Series 10 speakers. Wow, does this little device rock the house!!! Do no hesitate to give this a try, if, like me, you want to put a little 2015 into your 1970 on up two channel old school equipment. By the way, the laptop cost me about $100, so between the laptop and the HRT Music Streamer, I have a great way to play analog music files, digitally, for not a lot of money. Try it, you won't believe the difference!

    MSIII will improve your sound

*by T***N on Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2016*

I purchased this in order to play mostly flac and some MP3 files from my computer through my Amp. I run via USB out of my computer to the MSII and then through red/white RCA cables into a good quality stereo amp and a nice set of bookshelves. There was an instant improvement over just listening to the files on my computer through a Y splitter out of the headphone jack. The music has more clarity and depth. I also have an Audioquest Dragonfly v 1.2 that I normally use with headphones for travelling. It also sounds good when plugged into the amplifier but I think the HRT MSIII has a bit more depth and fullness to the sound then the Dragonly. However I like both as they each improve the sound, have a high quality build and feel, and are made in the USA. The Dragonfly is much more portable. Now the Dragonfly travels with me and MS III stays at home next to the Amp where it sounds great. I just set my computer next to it when I come home, plug in the USB, it automatically detects and starts playing music through the AMP. It also improves sound from movies when played through VLC player. Highly recommended.
