I *disassemble and clean the pump* and surfaces every few weeks as per the instructions. If the pump fails you (the 1star reviews seem to all not understand), it's likely from mineral buildup on the impeller, or the little motor housing got a small leak. * All the fountains on amazon use this same grade pump. * They are cheap to replace if you need one. But just keep them clean.
