I use this almost exclusively for beans. If you soak beans over night, it only takes 6 minutes (or two whistles) for them to be cooked. Last night I browned a stuffed chicken breast in it, then put in a 1/2 cup of water and put the lid on. After 7 minutes, I released the pressure, removed the chicken and threw in a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of flour. I wisked it with the cooking liquid and made a great pan gravy. The cooking time is about 5 minutes on a gas stove, while the pressure cooker can be opened after 5 to 6 minutes from taking out of gas stove. The time extends if one uses electric coil. The time extends based on the quantity. The maximum capacity of raw rice is 1.25 cup, since it makes about 1 lit cooked rice. The cooker can be used to the maximum 75% as per brochure. 3. I note that many are attempting to cook dried beans and mushrooms, after soaking in water. This small pressure cooker may not be good for those tasks. In my experience, the pressure cooker is excellent for cooking rice, all kinds of lentils and dals, hard vegetables, etc. I also used the base to make sambar gravy on occasional times. I also used the base as frying pan/ tawa to make upma for large quantity. 4. This pressure cooker doesn't make a continuous noise after the pressure builds in, it blows a 'whistle' intermittently, the more often the higher the burner of the stove - I find the whistles very useful because I can count them even when I'm not in the kitchen. Gradually I was able to know how many whistles before potatoes (2-4), black beans (10 or more, if not soaked overnight), chickpea (15 if not soaked overnight) etc would be cooked. It is too small; I was expecting a 2 Liter cooker but it is only about 1 Liter. I compared it to a 2 quarts pan that I have and it is about half the size of it (2 liters = 2.11 quarts, so I was expecting it to be bigger than my 2 quarts pan). As another reviewer said, the manufacturer is cheating. It seems well built and looks nice, but I am returning it and thinking about ordering the 3.5 liter cooker if I knew the actual size.I am assuming it is less than 3.5 liters (perhaps 2 liters and that's what I need). Can any one tell me the actual size of the Prestige 3.5 liter stainless steel cooker? By the way, I purchased 2 Presto stainless steel pressure cookers from Amazon (4 quarts and 6 quarts) and they are excellent cookers (I have used them several yrs). Unfortunately Presto does not have any cookers less than 4 quarts, that's why I ordered the Prestige cooker.
