Mat is pretty thick and lays flat, seems like it will work for a long time as long as it's treated OK, as in don't scratch the top of it, as that might damage the erasable surface/risk further damage. Marker it comes with is wet erase, I assume so you don't accidentally wipe the words off, but I think the surface would work OK with dry erase as well.
