Is there a way to open it without breaking it?** A: No, mine comes off real easy and I can put it back on with no problems **Q: what size are the threads? 1/4x20, M6, M8, or other?** A: Definitely not 1/4-20 since the rod itself is 3/16” and the threaded stud is pretty close to the same thickness, It is probably metric as you pointed out. **Q: What is the search head? What does it do?** A: I haven’t had the issue of using it but I believe it is to pick up a screw or other small metal piece from a place you can’t get a hand into.
