When you purchase a battery run tool that has its own specific charger with the battery....read the directions. generally but not always the charger will have a built in short circuit monitor, over and under voltage monitor with the addition of overheat protection. This means that the charger will generally stop the charge cycle if a charge fault is detected. Non specific generally are less expensive and do not normally have the additional safety features. I almost burned down my garage charging a lithium ion battery.....There was no overtime protection in the charger which ignited my wooden work bench top and then ignited the battery....the following is a quote from one manufacturer.
