If there is ethanol in this product, I can't find it. I seriously doubt that the yeasts and/or bacteria produced any. It's a good product and lasts "forever" (over a year) in the refrigerator if properly covered after each use. **Q: does this need to be refrigerated once it is opened??** A: I don't think I ever put mine in the refrigerator and it was fine. I figured there's enough vinegar and salt in it, so it shouldn't matter. **Q: is this halal?** A: No it isn't. In my search, I have never found HALAL certified Gochujan paste. The best possibility is to purchase the gochujan pepper flakes, because it's only the flakes you bypass the alcohol from fermentation.
