The wings extend inside the globe like the picture shows. You will need a cap to hold the light up inside. My cap wouldn't stay on so I cut a piece of packing foam to hold it inside. So far so good.One thing you need to understand is the light will need a AAA rechargeable battery. **Q: What is the diameter and length of the insert.** A: The part that goes into the globe is ~1" across. The total length is ~5", but once it is inserted into the globe the panels deploy to the sides. **Q: Does this light in color or just white?** A: Mine are multi colored and it lights up great...... But maybe try lighting yours with a flashlight before ordering .... **Q: Is this waterproof?** A: It does not say on the packaging that it is.
