When its hot and sunny, my phone will overheat in the little well on top of the dash and there's not really a secure place to lay it otherwise (our cupholders are generally in use on these occasions). Its not a 100% perfect fit in the opening, but for the price its fine. It holds and iPhone 12 laying on its side.
