IF you were to get a GMRS license ($65 and doesn't require a test, info here: http://www.hrdent.com/gmrs/gmrsapp.html ), you could program this unit to only use the 462Mhz frequencies assigned to 50W GMRS service. There's only 8 of those channels and only 5 that don't have stipulations such as not using close to the Canadian border. If you're using regular GMRS handhelds or other handhelds they max out at 5W. That would mean you could find your self in a situation where your car could transmit and be heard in the pits, but your crew may not be able to speak back if there are hills or lots of buildings in the way. Here in NorCal where I am, that's the case. So you may consider using a second one of these units in a car, RV or with a 12V battery so you can match the power and be heard back as well.All that said, these can be tricky to program and you'd be breaking the law using one without a license. If either of those things are problems for you, then you may want to check out something like the Midlands Micro Mobile unit, which is limited to 5Watts of power, and pre-programmed to only GMRS frequencies, but still requires a GMRS license.EDIT: oh, and you'll need to sort out helmet headset wiring. Mobile units use an RJ45 (8P2C) connector. It is possible to get adapters to various headset connectors such as IMSA or simple 3.5mm TRRS.
