They are a bit loose around the shaft and I tried throwing them on without the socks and rain did manage to find its way in. With hunter cardigan sock liner, they are perfect and if I tried to go down a size, I don't think I would be able to pull them off. They have kept my feet warm and dry for a rainy dog walk without feeling clunky and the foot bed is comfortable and moderately supportive.
