I had two goals: 1) strengthen the wifi signal in parts of my house; and 2) be able to stream 4K movies on my TV without having to run a 100' ethernet cable from one end of the house to the other (since my modem/router is at one end of the house and the TV is at the opposite end). I had several alternatives. I could have run an ethernet cable up the wall, through the attic, and out the other side. This would certainly have worked, but would have required drilling a couple holes, and spending a couple hours of either my time or an electrician's (expensive!) to run the cable. I had already tried a more powerful router and wifi extenders in the house, but the signal was still weak far away from the main modem/router. In order to assess the effectiveness of the Powerline 1200, I ran speed tests (using the FCC speedtest app) before and after installation. Just prior to installation, I had a download speed of 6 mbps. Just after, I had a wifi speed of 40 mbps! That's almost seven times faster--and more than enough to stream 4K video. I got the increased speed by installing one Powerline adapter next to the main modem/router. I installed the second at the far end of the house. The LED signal strength indicator light was showing either green or amber--so a signal strength of at least 50 mbps at the adapter. I then used an ethernet cable to connect my second router to this adapter. Now I can stream 4K videos on my TV over wifi, or by easily attaching a short ethernet cable from the TV to the router, which is placed on the shelf below the TV. Very, very happy with my $65 investment. If you actually wanted to be right next to the router, you'd plug your device into the router and/or have such good wifi as to not need this at all. So in practical usage there is one unit that you can legitimately use for the purpose of having a remote wired connection away form the router. These are expandable, by buying additional units. So buying 1 set gets you router mounted + 1 remote, buying two sets gets you router mounted + 3 remotes, etc. Just always keep in mind that you lose 1 unit to the need for it to be connected directly to the router. **Q: Can someone tell me what this does?** A: Depends on which version you refer to. The PLW1010 has WiFi capability, the PL1010 does not. They both have an ethernet port. The base unit is located near your router - use ethernet to connect the base unit to your router to get the best throughput from your router and into the house wiring. Plug it into an Electrical outlet and it sends your LAN signal through your house wiring to be picked up by the remote unit(s) plugged into wiring elsewhere in the house. The remote unit has an Ethernet port, so you can attach a Smart TV, BluRay, Game Console, whatever, to the ethernet and get pretty good network response (probably not gigabit, but pretty good anyway). With the Wifi Version (the PLW1010) the remote unit ALSO transmits WiFi signal. I have not purchased this WiFi product yet, I have a ethernet only version right now and looking at this to expand my iPhone/tablet Wifi signal in remote parts of the house). As such, I have an older house and the electrical wiring is sketchy and is rather noisy and fluctuates, but this technology seems to work nonetheless even on the other side of the house, I even have had the base unit plugged into an extension cord and it still works. So bottom line, this will extend your LAN signal to another room of the house via ethernet, and the WiFi version also creates a WiFi Access Point in that remote room. From what others say here, that Wifi is an extension of your router WiFi in SSID/pw. If you buy two kits, you'll have - one powerline LAN distributor (non-wifi) - two WiFi extenders (each: PL receiver + Wifi broadcasting + 1 Ethernet Port) - one powerline receiver (non-wifi) you can plug to the power outlet and use as single Ethernet port **Q: Will the top of the Powerline 1200 block the ground terminal of the upper outlet of a wall socket if plugged into the lower one?** A: Yes, it blocks most any plug. I dont understand why companies design plugs and power bricks without the clearance in mind. Also, it feed the cable from the bottom, so if you have trim that protrudes from the wall, or a low to the floor plug you might be forced to put it in the top plug of the outlet, like I have, which completely blocks the other outlet. Great product. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Not bad, but a couple issues *by D***L on January 31, 2023* On the advice of a friend, I decided to try this out, since I have no way of running an ethernet line to my TV, which would occasionally buffer using wifi. I was a bit skeptical & was prepared to return this if it didn't work. Here's what I found: * I get less than half of the speed of my wifi when connecting this directly to my tv (35 instead of 80 or 90), but that's still fast enough for it to work. Every so often I get a little buffering, but not often and not much. Was just watching a football game on Fox Sports and it kept buffering over and over, but I got out of the stream and then back in, and had no problems after that. I've watched entire movies and football games with no problems. My 2 biggest (but not major) gripes are: 1) Whoever designed the plug in unit should be fired! If you plug this into your top outlet, it will obviously cover the bottom outlet as well. However, when plugged into the bottom outlet, the curve of the top of it totally prevents you from inserting a 3-prong plug into the top outlet!! Sure, there's a pass-through outlet built into the unit, but this should *not prevent you from using the top outlet as well! SMH 2) I was impressed that this package came with 2 ethernet cables to be used both with your modem and whatever device you want to plug into the other end. However, they are *very* short cables and neither one of them was long enough to be used for my application.
