Wax? Does it require a finish?** A: Hi there, I have made many pens using Buffalo Horn. I apply a finish to all pens I make. Here is the process I use for the Buffalo Horn pens. The Buffalo Horn pen blanks are first turned on a lathe to get them to the general shape desired. From there they are sanded to its final shape beginning at 100 grit sandpaper. The sanding continues in incremental steps through 600 grit sandpaper. Following the sanding, the pen blanks are then finished using Albalon polishing disk with grits of 1000, 2000 and 4000. Once the sanding and polishing is completed a high gloss finish is achieved by the application of Hut satin finish polish followed by Hut high gloss polish. (As natural horn should) Cuts easily and takes a great polish. I sometimes use other materials to accent the horn, natural antler or aluminum composite like in my example pictures. Be prepared for the strong smell of burning hair as you turn, drill and sand it. It is made of the same basic stuff, keratin.
