I put filter floss under the sponges to prevent sand from falling to the bottom. Used pool filtration sand and branched off from my primary pump with a valve to adjust water flow. I don't use the included pump but I don't see why you cant. Works great for me! **Q: Is the pump that it comes with a submersible or not** A: I'm confused how any pump that's not submerged would even work?
