Wiggling them a bit as you set them into the ground does help reduce the breakage as another user recommended. We can also add that quite often the break leaves a small amount of the thinner bottom section still connected to the top. If that happens, and if you're careful, the tee can continue to be used with that small piece connected. If you want a step tee that will really last, you probably need a metal one or one that is made of heavy plastic.
