I was able to solve this by making a flat ring / collar of aluminum foil and placing it around the bulb, slightly higher than the bulb. The globe than smooshes it down a bit, which is fine. This allows light to still get through to illuminate the globe, but also distances the globe from the bulb slightly and absorbs some of the heat like a heat-sink. Now it works perfectly and the price was great. If the bulbs were dimmable you could just use a dimmer adapter.
