You should look up videos on what this is and how to use it, along with why it isn't just a planer. It IS not cheap, and certainly not a trivial purchase. It's for when you get serious about woodworking. I recommend you look at the CuTech 8" when you consider this. Again, not cheap. 2 - Planer -- This is the main tool for making wood consistent. It is moderately expensive part but makes the sides nominally equidistant (this works if the wood is not bowed, twisted, or otherwise uneven -- which is what the joiner helps with. 3 - one of these. It's an intermediate tool which can, with some care, do some of the work of the above two tools. Not all of it, but some. I'd say blow the extra money and get the 4" model, it's probably worth the extra bucks. **Q: Does this give a shave as smooth as a hand held planer? Trying to level off 5 different 2x6's together. Want to make sure this will do the trick.** A: This is an incredible little planer but will not do as even of a job as say a 12 in fixed planer. I have used both a hand planer and an electric hand planer. I would say the hand planer and electric will do close to the same job. This one is a near duplicate of the other with two minor differences, one good and another not so much. The plus is the little kickstand which holds the blade off the surface where you set it down. The only negative I found is the safety on the switch is only on one side. Right-handed it works fine, but with the left hand the safety is really awkward. That’s why 4 stars. For the money it’s a good tool.
